Minimally Invasive Surgical Options at NB OBGYN

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is a safe and effective alternative to traditional open surgery. During MIS the surgeon makes tiny incisions and the procedure is accomplished laparoscopy, in place of what would otherwise be a large abdominal incision.

There are many benefits of minimally invasive surgery including less pain, less complications, shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery times. MIS can be used to treat many conditions such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, abnormal bleeding, endometriosis, and pelvic pain.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

  • Myomectomy: Laparoscopic Surgical Options
  • Hysteroscopy: Diagnostic & Operative Hysteroscopy, including resection of polyps and fibroids
  • Colposcopy
  • Endometrial Ablation (Including Novasure)
  • Cystoscopy & Biopsy
  • Mid-urethral slings
  • Prolapse Repair of Cystocele and rectoceles
  • Minimally invasive vaginal procedures

Colposcopy

A Colposcopy is performed to examine the cervix, vaginal walls, and vulva. Colposcopies are used when a patient has an abnormal pap smear or if any skin abnormalities are present during a routine pelvic exam. The primary reason a Colposcopy procedure would be recommended is to detect precancerous lesions of cervical cancer. While performing a Colposcopy, Dr. will use a colposcope, which is a small instrument that most resembles a microscope, to examine the patient’s cervix, vaginal walls, and vulva under magnification. Biopsies are often taken to diagnose precancerous lesions.

Novasure

Roughly one out of five women suffers from Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB), or “Menorrhagia”, which is also defined as heavy and long-lasting menstrual bleeding. Many women are under the impression that very heavy menstrual bleeding is “normal”, or just something they have to “deal with”, but this is not true. Novasure is a form of endometrial ablation that is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that reduces, or eliminates menstrual bleeding. Novasure is an alternative to a hysterectomy, as it does not require an incision. For more information on Novasure, please contact our office in the future. Endometrial ablation is not for women considering pregnancy.
